Cucalorus

I did not go to cucalorus because i am still a pre-film study student. I also worked and had other school projects that i had to work on too. I wanted to see The Messager probably the most, through some trailers i saw on line it looked interesting. I heard that there was a movie that was a parody of a porno movie and it was a funny movie. I also heard that Todd Berliner was acting in one of the films, i heard he was a shop keeper or something, and his part was only a couple seconds long. I would have like to been able to do the Kodak workshop, it sounded very interesting. Since I never been to a film festival, I am hoping that next year I will be a film major to get a pass and to have time to actually go see the films being shown. maybe one year i will have something in the festival myself. I heard from other students in my other classes had a great time at cucalorous. They were at the q&a section with the directors or who ever was there for the film. I can not wait till i can get a chance to go to cucalorus.

Rough Theater

I didn't really had a rough theater. I lived more in the country and the only theater we had were Regal Theaters. The only one I remember was a theater that play movies right before they came out on VHS and the only part I remember is that it only had 4 screens in it and the movie i saw was The Land Before Time with my mom. The Theater has closed and is now a Mexican bar/club. Which before i moved down to go to school here, I worked in a store in the same outlet. Other than that theater, The one we made in class was the first rough theater i been in. It was pretty fun and reminded me of the forts my siblings and i would make on the second story on opposite sides of the stairs and play war with each other, normal my brother and I vs. my sisters.

super-jar

When i first saw the baby jars, i didn't know what to do the first day of the race, so i put it aside and thought about it for the first 24 hours. It hit me at work later that day. I remember a video that was based on the comic book that they showed it frame by frame and they added voice and sound effects to it. I remember thinking that I hardly notice that the video was nothing but 30 to 40 frames or a part of the comic page. Then i came up with two characters that one was dumb and annoying and the other doesn't care about the other one. The dumb one (eddie) thought he can be a hero and dreams about himself being one then try to fly and kills himself. While the other(jimbo), just don't care what he did. I took the pictures and record the voices on my phone then transfer them to my USB card. I edit the sound part first, so i could get it in a minute, which i ending up cutting half of what i took out of the final film. I really enjoy this project, which is something i haven't done in a long time.

yes, men

They have balls to go to conferences posing as WTO representatives and telling unbelievable things that seem normal to the people that are at the conference. The executive luxury office suit was the second place prank or whatever you wanna call it. It funny how that the TV monitor's stand looks like a man's sexual organ and no one seem to flinch about it. The best one is were they went to the college and give hamburgers to the students and while there eating they tell them that they are recycling human waste to make burgers to feed use at their restaurants. Just to see the expressions on the students face when they were eating the burgers. One student told them that what they were doing was wrong and can't believe what they were doing. The Yes Men were positive that their point got across to the kids.

For my last project my theme is to something about peace through violence and demonstrate how wars and other conflicts ending through violence. I planned to manipulated broadcast reports and movies and or TV shows.

Molotov

I hate blogging. If you paint a painting from a photograph, the painter should not have to worry about copyright laws. I agree with Joy to just cite the source of the photograph and\or the person that took the photo like a person writing a paper and citing the source he or she got it from. The person should not have to contact the other. Beside Joy only used only section of the photo, not the whole thing. Susan s photo had meaning about the revolution, and Joys was about rioting......whats the difference? Rioting normally happens in a revolution.

The long take

I had fun last saturday shooting with the bolex camera. It would have been better if the temperature was a little cooler. My group didn't shoot first, but we helped out another group with their shoot. I was the grip, i guess thats right, pushing their camera operator around for their tracking shot. I had to keep the camera centered on the actors, by matching my speed of pushing to their walking speed. It took me a couple of times to get the speed of each actor, but some were not consisted, but i managed.

My group's orginal idea was that a person went behind something and another person came out. We change that to a so called love story about a pumpkin head guy and a scream head girl. I was the pumpkin head guy. We ran through the blocking a few times to were we felt comfortable with what we had. There was no problems with shooting it except that we had less then 56 seconds then what we supposed to have. The film did come out good, i loaded the film backwards, but thats ok, we can fixed it in final cut pro. It was a good experince using the bolex camera and it helps get me into blocking and timing the shot before shooting it.

48 hours

My idea for the film is to use pictures like in the film Fridays on the Farm. i will make it like the panels on a comic book and do voice overs for it. Since i work on tuesdays and wednesday after my classes it limits me on what i can do with an even more limited time. Can't wait to found out what the mystery prop is. I know it is a physical object, given the clue andre gave us. I will think up of an idea and just fill in the blank with the mystery object like Mad Libs or what ever they are called.

Second Scatch Film Junkies response

I liked this one better then the first film, we watched earlier this semster. It seems like there was a lot of things going on in the film. There are things that i seen on their film that i still wonder how or what they used to do it, but for the most part i kinda have an idea on how or they made the film.

I just wonder if they plan everthing or most of it, or do they do it as they go and see what they come up with. I like planning moments that i want, but not the whole thing, cause i like to be surprised to see what i come up with. This is how i did the first two projects. I did what came to my mind at that moment and let it brench off from there. I find that it is more creative for me that way and most of the time it is better then something that i plan everything for.

sound reading

I believe that sound is much more then an added piece to a film. It is true that films do not need sound, like silent and some experimental films. Sound is as much important to films as the picture is. In a well made war film, if it had no sound and all you see are muzzle flashes, artillery hitting the ground, and men getting shot or killed, you would not get the full experience. Sure you can picture it in your mind, but you still won't know the full power of the film or sence. Hearing a shot striking a body, the deafen loudness of an artillery blast, and the sound of the guns firing, and the screams of orders and dying men is nesscary for a war film. In movies that have a lot of dialogue, how would you know what they are saying if you can't hear them?

If sound is an added piece to film, then film is an added piece to sound. Earlier in the 1900s, Orson Welles did his famous War of the Worlds broadcast that made the country to go in a painic. This was done with just sound and no picture or film at all.

Here is a link to a part of the boardcast: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejt_aWUrEp8

Sound cues things that are happening, that happen off screen. When you see a character on the screen and a loud noise catches the character by surpise, it does the sam for the audience too. We are surprise as much as the character in the movie, which connects the audience to the character through the use of sound.

Sound does not change the mood of the film or picture. I think that is bullshit. You see someone get a nail hammered through his hand, you see blood and all that good stuff, but adding sound wouldn't change the meaning or tone of the film, but connect us more with the the pain of the person, the sound lets you feel the pain in you bones and lingers on after you seen that sence.

Overall, i thought the reading was hard to follow, and i thought i wrote bad. I most have fallen asleep three times by keep reading what i just read so i could somewhat understand what he is talking about. thats it. i believe thats all folks!!!!!!!!!!

response to wells

Wells comparison of the two types of animation are good, in my opinion. He broke down the essay into an easy format to follow. I like the orthodox animation out of the two. Film and movies are entertainment to me. I believe that was the main objective in the early years of film. I like a story in my films, wether animation or not.

I like a good story in my animation, not flashing color, or shapes of colors making useless shapes and don't really do anything, but try to perceive you to see the author's interpretation of the film or your own. I like it to be in black in white. I don't want to watch an experimental film that makes me have to go to the restroom because of the pattern and objects on the screen, although it would be funny to play this video to a group of people and watch them all run to the restroom at the same time, if there was a experimental film that actually makes people go to the restroom.

At the moment, I will not make too many experimental animation films, because i am not too interested in it, but i enjoy goofing around and watch what what came out of it. I don't care to much of there being a message or thought behind the screen. I like to see how cool the film looks.

I do agree with Wells that orthodox animation has unity of style, because you would not want the film to change style half way through the film while you are enjoying the story of the movie, it would be distracting. When you are watching a cartoon series and each week the style change in each episode, it be cool to do every once in a blue moon.

There is no absence of artist in an orthodox animation. The animation is the work of an artist, unless it is done by a computer, RISE OF THE MACHINES!!!! The way the film is drawn is the artist talent, it may not be what some people consider "talent", but i seen some animation films that look like they were made by my goats.

Thats all i got to say about this.

cameraless filmmaking so far...

So far, I am enjoying the camera less filmmaking. It is another cool way to make films. The different ways to create films without a camera are neat. It lets you do almost anything to the stock to create almost anything. I like how you can use magazines, newspaper, tape, and water to create interesting patterns on film. I had made a sentence out of magazine clippings when we were working on it in class. I cut out several words out and made a sentence, but it the film went by fast and I didn’t see it. I was hoping it would not have gone by so fast that I would have been able to see a glimpse of it as it went by. I did manage to see some of the piece of the film that I had put my tape on. I knew about scratching the film stock, but it still interest me how you can create a lot of patterns and other things just by scratching. I have not got the chance to paint on the film stock yet, but will get to try it out tonight in class. Processing the film in the dark room was very cool. It was pretty neat to work in the dark with the red light, and placing the objects on the film. Then you flash the film with light to expose the film stock. Then you place the stock in the developer for a few seconds then you put it in the fixture, and then rinse it off in ware, I believe that’s the correct order. Then you let it dry. The items that I put on the film stock made interesting designs. I put salt, pepper, rice, sugar, paperclips, a dime, little gold things, blue glass pebbles, and parsley on the film stock. I believe that I am going to do this again, but I am not sure, I would enjoy doing this again with different items to see what different designs and effects that I will get.
There is probable many different ways to manipulate film that we have not talked about in class. There is probable many different ways that even people that manipulated film for a living and/or hobby that they do not even know. I would like to learn more techniques in class to manipulate film in the future to help me with future projects.

Synesthesia

I think it would be pretty nice to be a synesthete, being able to remember things clearly like grapheme ---> color synesthesia. I don't think that i am a synesthete, but i do remember things that i only hear once. I don't think it is anything that deals with synesthete. When i hear a low not, i picture it more of the hot colors like red and orange, compare to a high note which i picture it more of a cool color like blue or green. I don't know if i am a synesthete or i made a connection with the pitches and colors long ago. When reading about the sound ---> color synesthesia, i remember in the movie, Mr. Holland's Opus, Hollad's son is deaf, so in order for him and other people that are deaf to enjoy music, there is a device that lights up in a specific color to match the sound and tempo of the music. I believe that the people with the sound ---> color synesthesia must be one of the best enjoyment in their lives, by being able to listen to a song or standing and hearin nature, to see colors that resemble those sound must be breathe taken, and seeing what other people can't. They must also see a bit of dark sounds that they could use a painting or film to get a emotion a cross to the audience, so they can experience too. I that everyone is a synesthete in some intesity, i bet that some are barely noticable to some that are very noticable.

Scratch film junkies

The video was pretty cool and show me what i can do with film. I like how they can scratch the film, and when you watch it the scratch moves left to right and such. That must took a while to do. I wonder if they plan the whole video out or went by the fly of their pants. When it comes to art, expression, and stuff of that nature, i don't like to plan it out much, but see where mind takes me. I liked how the junkies match the action of the shapes and objects to the music. The real life video mixed in with their manipulation was ok. When the music got louder the screen became busy with a lot of shapes and objects. I would like to know how they control the ink they apply to the film stock, if they controlled it at all. This class so far seems that it is going to be a fun and interesting, which i like, mostly because i get to work with my hands and there it no essay papers to write, only this blog. i don't know if i will use any of these techniques in the kinda of films that i wanna make, most likely westerns, cause i grew up watching them, mostly John Wayne. I still like to know these techniques incase i do need them, maybe i make a couple of experimental films, who knows. The scratch film junkies's film was a good why to introduce the class to the things we will be doing in the class. It looks lilke there were quite a bit different techniques to manipulate film.
